August 9, 2010 issue of The Weekly Standard - spot for a short humor piece about how the author & his wife are frequently embarrassed by their young son, who has a habit of making rude observations about people - "H is for Huuuuge"

Mouthy Kid

Guitar virtuoso Steve Morse has teamed up with young vocalist Sarah Spencer to create a blend of styles that should appeal to those who love the quieter side of Morse or the kind of purity of voice of an Alison Krauss. In fact this musical coupling brings comparisons to "Raising Sand." Cover design and some photo manipulation on this one.

2010 marks a lineup and slight name change (add the .), and 2 releases for From.uz. "Seventh Story" and "Inside Seventh Story" (studio album & live DVD respectively). This also is the first album for the band to use vocals. I love being a part of this band, having worked on all the releases.

After recording 2 albums as lead vocalist for Kansas in the mid-80's, John Elefante did two projects under the Mastedon moniker. He has also done several solo albums under his own name, but 2009 marks the return of Mastedon in Europe. Better known simply as John Elefante in the States, the album will be released under a different title, "Revolution of Mind" & a different (photographic) cover. This album also reunites John with Kansas guitarist Kerry Livgren for the first time in 20 years.

Adele Mulford, Art Director at Discipleship Journal called with an assignment based on my caricature work, wanting the kind of textural detail used in subjects like Ted Kennedy and Tip O'Neil. However, it wasn't a caricature assignment per se, but to illustrate a critical spirit in the expression of a middle aged woman. It would have been easier to make it an old bitty, or a grumpy old man, but I enjoyed the challenge of creating a woman who was not unattractive, but still exhibited an unattractive character.

Bob Scott of Compassionate Justice International has written a book entitled "Saving Zimbabwe -- Life, Death & Hope in Africa", which looks at the history of Zimbabwe -- the colonialization and events which led to Robert Mugabe's coming to power and the death of 16 of Scott's friends, who were part of an integrated community called The Community of Reconciliation.

Garmin, the GPS company, asked me to create retro postcard art to be used in window displays for their pilot store on Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

The company owns an Isetta, one of the first micro cars, which they wanted to use in both the art and window. Besides the fun of creating the retro images, it was particularly fun for me, as I had a model of an Isetta as a kid and hadn't seen one since!

Loving music as I do, it's a joy to have the opportunity to work on CD projects from time to time. Since 2006, it has been my pleasure to work with Fromuz, a 4 piece prog/fusion band from Tashkent, Uzbekistan. OVERLOOK is the band's second album, scheduled for release this fall on 10T Records.

In addition to the cover illustration, each of the 5 tracks has their own image. My own daughters played roles in the art for OVERLOOK. Our daughter Rachel and her husband took the photo of the port of Hvar, Croatia that I modified in the cover illustration. The 4th track, entitled "13th August" happens to be our oldest daughter, Kristyn's birthday, so I used snapshots of her as part of the imagery in that composition.

I just got word that "Octopus on the Altar," one of my favorite humorous illustrations this past year, was awarded a gold medal at the EPA (Evangelical Press Association) show this year for Best Original Art for Discipleship Journal - Adele Mulford, Art Director
