Proto~Kaw: "Before Became After"

"Before Became After" was the first studio album for the band originally known as Kansas, after 30 years of being apart and then reuniting. They were the 2nd lineup of Kansas. The third group was the one that made it big.

Before I began my work, Kerry had combined a couple of photos, a snow covered bison, standing in the scorched earth of a prairie fire. The line of flame arching over the hills toward the horizon. The band did not own the rights to them, so I set about alternate ideas. One day, while talking with Lynn Meredith, their vocalist, he mentioned that the plains Indians referred to prairie fires as "the red buffalo". Bingo! That was the germ of an idea that became this cover. Hear Proto-Kaw samples at www.myspace.com/protokaw
